Expiratory Pressure Modulation

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea is a common disorder that is associated with important neuropsychological and cardiovascular sequelae. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is frequently prescribed treatment and is effective in reducing objective and subjective complaints. The efficacy of CPAP is compromised by relative poor compliance. A typical complaint by those using conventional CPAP is that it is difficult to exhale. Therefore, reducing pressure during exhalation may improve tolerance with therapy. Expiratory pressure modulation (EPM) technology monitors the patient¡¯s airflow during expiration and reduces the pressure in response to the patients. Increased comfort levels associated with EPM therapy have potential to improve patient adherence to therapy.
